The Hippie Within – Feb. 28, 2018
“Why hippie mama?” the first question my hubby asked when I told him I am starting a blog. Why not? Apparently I’ve been a closet hippie for far longer than I realized. It all came to light with the birth of our daughter. That’s when the “H” word started to get tossed about in reference to parenting styles, gardening, cooking and even my love for barefooted-ness.
Perhaps my first clue should have been my choice to homebirth my daughter with the help of our wonderful midwives. If you want to turn heads folks, this is the number one way to do it. Don’t get me wrong, that was the last reason for this choice in my mind. Research backs it, fewer interventions during birth leads to better mama-baby outcomes. Enough said. Decision was made.
As you would know, one hippie decision snowballs and leads to another… Next thing I know I’m completely immersed in breastfeeeding, attachment parenting, baby wearing and co-sleeping. Some might refer to this as helicopter parenting (which is not quite accurate), rather the term is crunchy, but to be honest I prefer hippie. Yes, I choose to be with my daughter as much as possible, mainly because I love her more than the moon, but also because she needs me. Feeding her organic (or homegrown when possible) food as well as ensuring her emotional and mental support during her developing years is important to me. Yes, I have been called a hippie for these very opinions. I say, hippie on!
So on this hippie journey, we trudge forth trying new endeavors every year. Currently I grow a variety of crops in five raised bed gardens, canning and freezing as much as possible. Also we have a small flock of chickens and ducks which provide us with eggs. I cook from scratch all that I can (and that time allows) and am learning new tips and tricks all the time.
So if you are on this hippie journey too, or are interested in starting, continue on with me and we can learn more together.
