The Terrible….Teeth? And how to (mostly) tame them

When you first meet your sweet, little bundle of squishy baby joy you likely aren’t thinking too much about what is to come. You are too busy falling in love and memorizing every tiny detail about them. Sure you hear the stories about how “you’re never gonna sleep again!” and “wait until you get to the terrible twos!” or (my personal favorite) “just wait until she’s a teenager!” <sigh>.

One major milestone between the squishy cuteness and the terrible twos that everyone fails to mention is the bleepity bleep teeth! Holy moly!! This came as a horrible and unexpected painful journey starting around 4 months for our little one. And it feels like it has been non-stop ever since. Trust me when I say, these are the parenting moments that have made me want to lock myself in the bathroom with a good bottle of wine and some seriously dark chocolate for an undetermined amount of time.

As with all things baby related, the teething passed (almost) as swiftly as it began. Now we ride the ebb and flow of the teething tides as new teeth decide to emerge every so many weeks. We are always guaranteed that as soon as our little one gets into a great sleeping routine, a new tooth is just around the corner to cause a total sleep regression mess. At least something in parenting is predictable (ha ha).

We have a little girl who chooses to be (erm) very strong willed and not much has helped with her teething pain, drooling, and overall fussiness. That is until we invested in an amber teething necklace. This necklace began helping with the fussiness, lack of sleep, and drooling within the first 48-72 hours of putting it around her neck! Amazing! Now I have to be honest with you, my dear readers, I have heard many mixed reviews about amber teething necklaces from other parents. All I can attest to is my personal experience in seeing the drastic change it made with my daughter.

It is important to make sure the amber necklace is of good quality. The ones sold here by Baltic Essentials come highly recommended and is where I purchased my daughter’s.

So how does it work? Essentially the baltic amber contains succinic acid which is a natural occurring pain reliever (compounds of which are often found in aspirin). As the amber stone is warmed by the body heat of the person wearing it, the acid is released and absorbed through the skin helping to provide analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. These are obviously a huge help with the pain of teething! Not comfortable with a necklace? There are also bracelets and anklets too!

In terms of safety, it is important to ensure a necklace size that is not too small nor too big or loose. It is also recommended that the necklace be removed at night or anytime your child is not under close supervision due to obvious choking hazard nature of the necklace. The one my daughter wears also has a safety break away clasp that will snap apart if it were to become entangled in anything, which is a wonderful added safety precaution. The stones are also small enough to not be a choking hazard. Another win!
